6 Elements of a Good Job Offer
by Kathy Gromoll
You’ve just gone through a series of interviews, and you’ve found a winner. Now it’s time to call and offer him or her a position. What should you make sure to say
1) State clearly the wages. Will they be paid on an hourly, salary and/or commission basis? A best practice is to state salaries on a weekly or pay period basis. An annually quoted salary in the wrong context might be construed as a contract.
2) Be clear about their title.
3) Sometimes offers are contingent upon passing a drug test or receiving good references. Be sure to address this with your candidate.
4) Agree on a starting date. Make sure to tell them when and where to report for their first day of work.
5) If you will be providing a relocation package, know all the pieces and be able to discuss it with them.
6) If the candidate needs to think about the offer, state how long your offer will be in effect.
A Piece of Advice for Peace of Mind
Should you place your offer in writing, make sure you have a format that has been reviewed by an attorney or consultant to make sure you are not making commitments you do not intend to make.
